What’s in it for me?

Construction & Civil Engineering

  • The sector is forecast to grow by 2% per annum, or better, over the next decade with 200,000 more employment opportunities expected to arise.
  • Civil Engineering graduates average starting salary in 2012 was £26,545, with two thirds being in employment within 6 months of graduation and 92% being in employment or further education
  • The Construction industry Training Board’s ‘West Midlands Skills report (2012-2016)’ identifies a need to recruit an additional 3,730 skilled workers per annum within the Construction and Civil Engineering sector in the West Midlands alone.

Engineering

  • Demand for graduates in Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering is expected to outstrip supply with an estimated 100,000 new engineering graduates required each year to meet demand
  • The sector is suffering from a shortage of highly skilled workers and forecasts a requirement to recruit an additional 80,000 new workers by 2020
  • Currently, 45% of the workforce is educated to Level 3, and over 30% are educated to degree level, however, the demand for skilled workers educated to degree level is set to exceed 40% by 2020
  • graduate engineers start on an average of £21,000 per annum in the West Midlands, increasing to an average of over £50,000 with experience.
